I've read a couple of articles lately on the benefit of writing a handwritten note - and I couldn't agree more. More powerful than an email, more memorable than a gift, more thoughtful than almost anything else...a handwritten note is truly the gold standard when it comes to expressing your appreciation. Here are a few examples of when you can be using this powerful, affordable, unique (sadly) form of communication.
Committee Work - send a personal note to each member of the committee you worked on. Mention something unique about each person's contribution to the committee.
Professional Courtesy - Has someone extended a personal courtesy to you? Upgraded a product or service for you, made an introduction, invited you to join an organization. What a great way for them to start their day, opening a note from you thanking them for thinking of you.
You Got the Appointment - Whether you scored an appointment with "the" decision maker, the one who could make-or-break your year, or you met with an insider who is helpful at providing perspective and context for you...a quick note will let them know how much you appreciate their valuable time.
Personal Info - in this world of sharing information, it's amazing the personal details we come to know about each other. I've learned of people's challenges and triumphs through Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. If someone you know has lost their job, received a promotion, celebrated the birth of a child or is facing a crisis of sorts, a note from you can really make their day.
Helpful Articles - Although we all gather a lot of info online, every now and again we go old-school and read a newspaper, magazine or trade publication. When you come across something that might be of interest to a colleague or client, clip it out and mail it with a note.
Special Occasions - Birthdays, anniversaries and holidays are all great moments to mail off a card with a hand written note inside.
So, take a moment and think about someone you'd like to really connect with, and send them a handwritten note at your first opportunity.
